Dubai LG Electronics plans to launch an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) TV in the UAE in the last quarter of the year, D.Y. Kim, President of LG Gulf FZE, told Gulf News.

OLED TV features a high quality picture and design and are more energy efficient, thinner than an iPad and provide better black-levels used in televisions today, but more expensive to produce than LED backlighting.

OLEDs potentially blend the benefits of both display types; they put out more light than plasma so they look better in a well-lit room, and they are faster than LCD so there is no ghosting. And their blacks are true black.

Increasing demand

Kim said LG has decided to feature a 55-inch display panel for its first OLED TV due to increasing demand for large-screen TVs. OLED TVs in the 40-inch range will also be launched later on. Their launch dates will be determined by market developments.

"Our current focus lies entirely on the Smart Cinema 3D TVs. We are foreseeing that this new category in home entertainment will dominate the market but are also focused on 3D TVs," he said.

Sweta Dash, Senior Director of LCD Research, IHS iSuppli, told Gulf News that OLED sets won't represent the bulk of TV sales. Only a few thousand units will be sold this year and a few million units by 2015.

"A 55-inch OLED set will be priced between $8,000-$10,000 (Dh29,376 to Dh36,720) in 2012. Although the price may fall to about $4,000 next year, comparable LCD models may cost less than $2,000 by then," she said.

LG yesterday launched 2012 Cinema 3D Smart TV line-up for this year. The South Korean firm is launching four sizes (42, 47, 55 and 60 inches) with prices ranging between Dh4,999 and Dh14,999.
